The Burnet High School girls soccer team lost to Liberty Hill Legacy Ranch 6-0 Jan. 22 and defeated Georgetown Gateway 3-1 Jan. 20 to begin District 25-4A play.

“I knew this was going to be a tough week because those are two quality opponents,” head coach Doug Ketcham said. “I really thought we could do a little better with Legacy Ranch, but we just didn’t. The good news is we came out injury free and I think it’s going to help us to get better.”

Gateway and Burnet played to a 1-1 tie in the first half. At the intermission, Ketcham told his players to “follow what we practice.”

“Do that,” he said,” and we’ll be successful.”

Bella Medina scored two goals and Hallie Poe scored the other. Avery Barth assisted Medina on one of her goals.

“We were trying to get the ball forward as quickly as possible and put it into space, run it down and center it and finish,” the coach said. “And in the first half, we were just putting them all down the middle. It was just coming back or we were taking poor shots that weren’t going to be goals.”

He noted the Lady Dawgs outshot the Lady Gators 17-2 and Gateway’s goal was on a penalty kick.

“It wasn’t like we weren’t getting shots,” he said. “We just weren’t getting quality shots like we needed to.”

Ketcham summed up Legacy Ranch.

“They’re really, really good, very, very talented,” he said. “Probably one of the best teams we’ve played so far. Just looking at their scores, they score a lot of goals. They give up a lot of goals. So I knew we’d have to score a lot of goals. It just never materialized. We were just bombarded by their attack.”

He noted the Lady Dawgs learned plenty from the match.

“We have to win our one-on-one battles,” he said. “We have to do a better job with that. So hopefully that’ll be a good that comes out of that because I felt like we let ourselves down losing some one-on-one battles, which negatively impacted us with the scoreline.”

Burnet travels to play at Lago Vista Wednesday, Jan. 28, for a varsity only match at 4:30 then welcomes Florence Friday, Jan. 30, with the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 6:30 p.m.
